AEC definitions
A specifier writes and coordinates the project specifications. They turn design decisions into sections that state products, reference standards, and execution, and they check that the drawings do not contradict the book. On many projects the architect of record employs the specifier. The specifier does not seal drawings unless they are also the architect.
Definition
Specifiers use MasterFormat to organize the manual and SectionFormat to organize each section into general, products, and execution. Their review catches a product named on a drawing and excluded in the spec, or a spec section nobody drew. They also edit Division 01 so submittals and substitutions have one procedure. A specifier is not a purchasing agent. Naming a basis of design is a specification act. Buying it is the contractor's.
In depth
Consultants write their divisions. The specifier or the project architect coordinates terminology, submittal rules, and cross-references. Two sections that specify the same joint sealant differently will both be bid.
Front-end documents, including conditions, are coordinated with counsel or the contract lead. The specifier flags conflicts. They may not be the one who edits A201.
Keynotes should point at real sections. Section numbers on details should exist. The specifier's drawing review is that comparison, done before issue, not after the first RFI.
Product names on drawings are minimized so the spec stays the single product statement.
If the team chose a roof system in design development, the section should say so at the level the phase requires. Outline specs early, full sections at CDs. Leaving the choice in meeting minutes means the manual will not match the estimate.
Substitution procedure belongs in Division 01. Each section should not invent its own.
The specifier may review product data for sections they wrote, under the architect's direction.
The review compares the submittal to the section. It does not redesign the product in the stamp.
Examples
The specifier deletes a manufacturer the drawing keynote named, and points the keynote at the section that lists acceptable products.
Division 01's submittal section is the only place review time is stated. Technical sections refer to it.
A consultant's mechanical section uses a different substitution rule. The specifier aligns it before the manual is issued.
