Shop Drawing

A shop drawing translates design intent into fabrication instructions. The contract drawings produced by the architect and engineers describe what the finished work has to achieve — the geometry, the performance, the relationships between systems. A shop drawing describes how one trade will actually build its piece of that: every connection, every dimension, every weld, every piece mark. It is prepared by the party doing the fabrication, not by the design team, and it is submitted for review as a type of submittal. The reviewer confirms conformance with the design intent expressed in the contract documents; the fabricator remains responsible for dimensions verified in the field and for the means and methods of fabrication.

Shop drawings versus contract drawings

Contract drawings show design intent. They establish what the building has to be — the layouts, the assemblies, the performance requirements, the relationships between systems — at a level of detail sufficient to price and permit the work. They deliberately stop short of telling a fabricator how to build anything.

Shop drawings pick up exactly where that stops. A structural drawing shows a beam and calls out its size; the shop drawing shows the beam with every bolt hole located, every connection detailed, every piece given a mark number so it can be tracked from the mill to its position in the frame. The two documents describe the same steel at completely different resolutions, and confusing their roles is the source of most arguments about who was responsible for a dimension.

Who produces them, and why that matters

The fabricator produces the shop drawing because the fabricator knows its own shop — the equipment, the standard connections, the stock sizes, the tolerances it can actually hold. A connection detailed by someone without that knowledge is a connection that gets redrawn.

That division also allocates risk. Because the fabricator prepared the drawing and will verify the field dimensions, the fabricator owns those dimensions. The design team owns whether the result still satisfies the design. This is why review stamps are worded so carefully, and why a reviewer who starts checking the contractor’s dimensions is quietly assuming a liability the contract never gave them.

What the review actually checks

The reviewer is answering one question: does what the fabricator intends to build still deliver what the contract documents require? That means checking specified materials and finishes, confirming that connections carry the loads the structural drawings assumed, verifying that clearances and interfaces with adjacent trades survive, and confirming that anything the specification called for is present.

It does not mean re-engineering the connection or recalculating the fabricator’s dimensions. Review actions follow the submittal convention — approved, approved as noted, revise and resubmit, rejected — and "revise and resubmit" on a long-lead package is a schedule event, not a paperwork event.

Where shop drawings go wrong

Most shop drawing problems are coordination problems that were already latent in the contract set. Each trade details its own scope in isolation, so a conflict the contract documents left unresolved shows up three times — once in the steel shop drawings, once in the ductwork, once in the sprinkler layout — and usually gets discovered by whichever trade submits last.

The second recurring failure is revision control. A shop drawing reviewed against an outdated contract revision is worse than no review at all, because it carries a stamp. Teams that track which contract revision each submittal was reviewed against catch this; teams that track only submittal numbers do not.
