Drawing Review

Drawing review is the internal quality gate a design team runs before a set leaves the office. It asks four questions of the documents: are they internally consistent, do they agree with the project manual, is anything required missing, and can a contractor build from them without guessing. It is distinct from plan review, which is the authority having jurisdiction checking a submitted set against adopted codes for permit, and from constructability review, which asks whether the sequence and means of construction are realistic. Drawing review is scheduled at milestones — typically design development, fifty per cent construction documents, and one hundred per cent — because errors caught before issue cost a fraction of what they cost once they reach the field.

The four checks a review actually performs

Internal consistency asks whether the set agrees with itself: does the plan match the section, does the door schedule match the plan, does a detail callout point at a detail that exists, do the dimensions close. Coordination asks whether the disciplines agree: does a duct pass through a beam, does a light fixture land on a diffuser, does the structural grid match the architectural.

Completeness asks whether anything required is absent — the detail that was always going to be drawn later, the schedule with blank cells, the code requirement that appears in the analysis but never made it onto a sheet. Buildability asks whether a contractor can price and construct the work without asking. Each check finds a different class of error, and a review that only does the first finds only the cheapest ones.

Why review timing dominates review quality

The cost of an error scales with how late it is found. A missing dimension caught at fifty per cent construction documents costs the minutes it takes to add. The same omission found during bidding produces a clarification to every bidder. Found during construction it produces an RFI, a week of cycle time, and possibly a change order. Found after installation it produces demolition.

This is why review is scheduled at milestones rather than performed once at the end. It is also why review is the first thing sacrificed when a deadline moves — the saving is immediate and visible, and the cost lands months later on somebody else’s budget line.

Why thorough review is genuinely difficult

A construction document set for a mid-size commercial project runs to several hundred sheets across five or six disciplines, plus a project manual of comparable length. Checking that every callout resolves, every schedule agrees with every plan, and every specified product appears where it should is thousands of individual comparisons.

Human attention does not hold at that scale. Reviewers get through the first eighty sheets carefully and the last hundred quickly, and the errors that survive cluster in the second half. The failure is not carelessness — it is that the task is longer than sustained attention lasts, and it arrives when the deadline is closest.

The review that improves the next project

The highest-value output of drawing review is not the markup on this set. It is the pattern across sets: the same detail that is always missing, the keynote that is always wrong, the interface between two disciplines that never coordinates cleanly the first time.

Firms that log review findings by type and feed them into their standards see recurring issues disappear. Firms that treat each review as a one-off keep finding the same problems, because the problem is in the template, the office standard, or the handoff between two teams — not in the set being reviewed.
