What Is a Column Grid?

Last reviewed: September 2026

A column grid is the set of reference lines on the drawings, usually lettered one way and numbered the other, that locate the columns and align every discipline's plans. A point such as A-3 is the intersection of grid A and grid 3. Dimensions locate the grids. The grids then locate the building.

Definition

Column grid

The grid is a naming system as much as a structure system. Architectural, structural, and MEP plans use the same bubbles so a beam, a wall, and a shaft can be discussed without pointing. Grid dimensions are among the most important on the set. If the architectural grid and the structural grid differ by an inch, every bay is wrong in one of the sets. Moving a grid after foundation work has started is a change, not a cleanup.

In depth

Letters one way, numbers the other

A common convention runs letters across one axis and numbers across the other, so no intersection is 'B-B.' The side of the plan where A starts should be the same on every sheet. A plan that is rotated relative to the rest of the set should say so, loudly.

Skipped letters, such as omitting I and O because they look like 1 and 0, are a firm convention. Stay consistent. Adding grid A.5 between A and B is the usual way to insert a line without renaming the building.

The grid and the columns are related, not identical

Columns often sit on grid intersections, but not always. A column offset from the grid should be dimensioned from the grid, not left visually 'close.' The structural plan is the authority for where the column is. The architectural plan should match.

Transfer beams, sloped columns, and circular grids break the simple story. They still need names and dimensions. A radial grid should say how angles are measured.

Every discipline inherits the grid

Backgrounds given to engineers should include the current grids and their dimensions. A mechanical shaft called 'near grid C' is not located. 'Centered on C-4, 2 feet toward D' is located.

If architecture inserts a grid and does not reissue backgrounds, the engineer's sheets will not show it. Coordination starts with a grid check, before the ducts are drawn.

Grid dimensions are a chain

Overall dimension, then bay dimensions, should add up. A string that does not add is a drawing error of the expensive kind, because layout crews start from grids. Publish one chain. Do not dimension the same bay differently on the architectural and structural sheets.

Establish the origin. A grid dimensioned from a property line on civil and from a column on architecture, with no tie between them, will float when the surveyor lays it out.

The field lays the grid out once

Survey control and the grid have to be tied on the site plan or a dimension plan. After layout, walls and embeds are measured from that control. A late grid shift moves embeds, openings, and steel.

As-built grids that drifted are recorded. Pretending the as-built matches the design grid hides a problem the next phase will hit.

Examples

Column grid on a real project

  • 01

Column at C-4 is on the intersection. The bay from C to D is dimensioned 30 feet on both the architectural and structural plans.

  • 02

A new grid B.7 is added by addendum. Backgrounds are reissued so mechanical sheets pick up the line.

  • 03

A column is offset 6 inches from grid A. The offset is dimensioned. It is not left as a graphic near-miss.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It is the lettered and numbered reference lines on the drawings that locate columns and align the set. Intersections such as A-3 name a point every discipline can use.

A bay is the area between adjacent gridlines in both directions. People also use the word for the spacing itself, such as a 30 foot bay.

The architect and the structural engineer establish it together, early. After it is issued, every discipline uses it. Changes are revisions, coordinated across backgrounds.

Treat it as a conflict and resolve it before layout. Do not average the two dimensions in the field.
