MEP Systems & Zones Analysis from IFC Models

The Nomic agent queries IfcSystem and IfcZone memberships in your IFC model — which elements belong to which HVAC system, fire zone, or electrical circuit. Use it for MEP system reviews, fire-compartment checks, and asset grouping during handover.

See exactly what is in each MEP system

IFC models group MEP elements into systems (IfcSystem) that define HVAC distribution networks, electrical circuits, plumbing systems, and more. Nomic extracts those groupings and lets you query them directly: what elements belong to the HVAC supply system, which ducts are part of the kitchen exhaust, what pipes are in the domestic hot water circuit.

  • List all elements in any named system by type and level
  • Check system completeness — find elements not assigned to any system
  • Cross-reference system assignments against MEP drawings and specs
Which spaces are in each fire zone
02 / Zone and fire compartment analysis

Which spaces are in each fire zone

Fire compartment and zone assignments are critical for life-safety compliance and facilities management. The agent queries IfcZone memberships to surface which spaces fall into each fire zone, smoke compartment, or FM zone — flagging spaces that are unassigned or assigned to multiple conflicting zones.

  • "List all spaces in each fire zone with their area"
  • "Which spaces are not assigned to any fire zone?"
  • "Show spaces that span more than one fire compartment"
System data ready for FM and asset registers
03 / Handover and asset grouping

System data ready for FM and asset registers

System and zone data extracted from the IFC maps directly to facilities management requirements — which assets belong to which system, which zones contain which equipment. The Nomic agent produces structured exports that feed asset registers and FM platforms at handover.

  • Export system element lists with asset properties for FM handover
  • Group equipment by system for preventive maintenance scheduling
  • Compare IFC system assignments against the design system documentation in the project space
Outcomes

What teams get from this workflow

System visibility without specialist software

Any team member can see what is in each MEP system or fire zone — no MEP authoring tool or BIM specialist required.

Fire zone compliance checks during design

Catch spaces with missing or conflicting zone assignments before the building consent submission, not after.

FM-ready system data at handover

System and zone extracts go directly into asset registers and FM platforms, reducing the manual data-entry burden at project close.

Questions about this ai for bim & ifc models workflow

Answers to common questions about this workflow.

What MEP system types does Nomic support?

Nomic reads any IfcSystem group in the IFC — HVAC supply and return, domestic hot and cold water, drainage, electrical power and lighting, fire suppression, and any custom systems defined by the MEP author.

Can I check if all MEP elements are assigned to a system?

Yes. Ask "Which duct segments are not assigned to any system?" or "Which electrical components lack a circuit assignment?" and the agent returns the list. This is a useful quality check before coordination or handover.

How does zone analysis work for fire compartments?

IFC zones (IfcZone) group spaces into compartments, sectors, and zones. Nomic extracts the zone-to-space relationships and lets you query them: which spaces are in each zone, what the total area of each zone is, and whether any spaces are unassigned.

Can this data flow into a CAFM or asset management system?

Yes. Export system and zone data as Excel or CSV and map it to your CAFM or CMMS import format. Nomic gives you the structured data; import formatting depends on your target system.
