AI for Drawing Legends and Notes

Drawing legends and general notes contain critical context for interpreting the rest of the drawing set. Abbreviation lists define firm-specific shorthand, general notes establish project-wide requirements, and symbol legends explain the graphic conventions used throughout the drawings. AI reads and interprets all of this context to analyze drawings accurately.

Abbreviation interpretation is the most straightforward application. When AI encounters "GWB" on a drawing, it checks the abbreviation legend to confirm this means "Gypsum Wall Board" (not "Glass Web Barrier" or some other interpretation). This project-specific context prevents misinterpretation of abbreviations that may vary between firms or regions.

General notes often contain requirements that override or supplement what is shown graphically on the plans — "all walls to extend to underside of structure unless noted otherwise," "provide fire caulking at all rated wall penetrations," "contractor to verify all dimensions in field." AI incorporates these general requirements into its analysis, so when it checks a wall for fire-rating compliance, it applies the "all penetrations require firestopping" requirement from the general notes even if firestopping is not called out at each individual penetration on the drawing.
